Community Triumph: A Story of a Moving Annual Benefit Event

In the current global standing where people often feel fragmented, disconnected, and sometimes even apathetic, there are remarkable moments that remind us of the power of coming together for a common cause. Adhunika’s 22nd Annual Fundraising Event on May 4th at Art House Productions in Jersey City was one such moment that brought our community together.  As I reflect on this inspiring gathering, I can’t help but feel a surge of pride and gratitude for the incredible spirit of generosity and unity that permeated every aspect of the occasion.

That evening, friends of Adhunika gathered to raise funds for projects supporting underserved women and children of Bangladesh.  Some of Adhunika’s projects include, but are not limited to: 1) sponsoring school scholarships, bicycles, and IT training for children; 2) supporting women artists to tell their stories using digital art, 3) mentoring female documentary filmmakers; 4) providing health and small business resources for Dalit artisans who experience caste discrimination, 5) and creating libraries for underserved children.  Adhunika accomplishes these goals through its partnership with organizations based in the U.S. and in Bangladesh: Sajida Foundation, Dhaka DocLab, Cartoon People, UPL (University Press Library), and Samhati.

The evening was filled with captivating poetry, intergenerational dance, live skit, healing bowls, and live music. Many Bangladeshi women-led businesses generously donated their products for raffle draws, volunteers worked tirelessly to ensure everything ran smoothly, and attendees turned out in festive attire to show their support for the cause. What truly made this event a success was the sense of camaraderie that pervaded the air. The Board of Adhunika shared their experiences with the audience, and attendees bonded over Adhunika’s overall mission to enhance the lives of Bangladeshi women and children.

Perhaps even more importantly, the event served as a powerful reminder of the strength of our community when we come together with a shared purpose. Through Adhunika Jr. the organization provides a sense of belonging for American children of Bangladeshi heritage together. In a world that often seems fraught with division and discord, it’s reassuring to know that a common goal, compassion, and solidarity still has the power to bring our children together, bridge gaps and build bridges between Bangladesh and the United States.

Thanks to the incredible support of our community for attending that evening, Adhunika made notable progress towards its fundraising goal. The impact of each donation, however big or small, cannot be overstated—it means more women and children will receive technology education, girls who never dreamed of touching a computer will know how to use one, women will learn to tell their own stories through documentary film, and children will have access to books for the first time.  We truly believe our humble effort will transform many lives for the better.
