No country can reach its full potential unless women have equal rights and equal opportunities. Women’s rights not get only recognized and acknowledged on this special day, but through out the year and coming decades. It needs to create a political space where women can talk about their rights and try to create a world without any sort of discrimination, irrespective of gender, religion, culture and cast.  Â
To recognize the fact that securing peace and social progress and the full enjoyment of human rights and fundamental freedoms require the active participation, equality and development of women and to acknowledge the contribution of women to the strengthening of international peace and security. For the women of the world, the Day’s symbolism has a wider meaning: It is an occasion to review how far they have come in their struggle for equality, peace and development. It is also an opportunity to unite, network and mobilize for meaningful change.Â

In a Bangladeshi society the mothers are responsible for all the wrong doing of her child, where as the father is spared of such scrutiny. Specially if the child in question is a girl. How many times I have heard, “Ish! meyetar ma oke kichu shikhalona keno?” As opposed to, “Oh o to omuk shaheber meye, oto bhalo korbei”! This creates a tenuous relationship at an early age between the mother and the daughter. Which is not fair to both the mother and the daughter. So for my International Women’s Day wish would be to a greater understanding and appreciation of this greatest female bond of all, the mother-daughter relationship. I would like to break out of the stereotypical roles of women in our Bangladeshi society. Just coz I’m going to carry a child does not mean I’ll be any less efficient at my job. Just coz I cry and my male counterpart doesn’t, it doesn’t mean I cry and give up. I will cry, yet I will also learn from my mistakes and do the same job better the next time. I will not get social insecurities get me, and will be willing to take risks at my job and in my life. I can keep going on, but lets not

On International Women’s Day, the debate again surfaces: “Why celebrate womanhood on one day out of 365?”
TV personality turned filmmaker Samia Zaman says, “Why not? Sure, the idea of celebrating womanhood 365 days would be every feminist’s utopian vision come true but that’s not the reality.
“There are both positive and negative aspects of marking a day for women on the calendar. I’m content with the positive aspect: women’s issues are highlighted on the media, success stories are brought to light. Even if the focus lasts a day, I consider it to be affirmative.

On International Women’s Day… Here’s to a group of fantastically strong, independent, ambitious, articulate women. All of us have experienced the trials and tribulations of what means to be a woman at some point or other- whether we faced inequality in the way we were treated, in our private lives or public lives- because of our age, gender, sexuality, ethnicity, beliefs, convictions… sometimes feeling that we have to try just a little bit harder to live up to the expectations, whatever the expectations might be, whoever sets these expectations.
And yet…we have transcended these barriers to shine in our own special ways. So kudos to all of you for being who you are, for achieving what you have achieved. Take this day to celebrate your achievements and to celebrate the achievements of all the women that you see around yourself- playing the roles of daughters, mothers, sisters, wives, but more essentially as caregivers, supporters, role models. Celebrate them and celebrate yourself

Happy International Women’s Day!
Today is the global day connecting all women around the world and inspiring them to achieve their full potential. IWD celebrates the collective power of women past, present and future.
Don’t worry, the day acknowledges that there may be no way or need to transgress all of our differences, and instead motivates women to show their power in their own ways throughout the world. From the Israeli and Palestinian women who came together this morning to protest a checkpoint in the West Bank to South African women launching a bus tour on education, there are over 400 events going on around the world today.

To me its not only about achieving equal opportunity, I would like to emphasise that we should be very aware of our strengths as well. There are many areas where women usually score better than men, we should keep on doing those while acquaring new skills and/or exploring male dominated arenas.
The success (of Women’s day concept) lies in how well we (the fortunate ones) perform our responsibilites for the less fortunate ones. We shouldn’t ask for opportunites we need to consciously work towards creating the same.
I am very hopeful that new generation Smart, Compassionate, Energetic Bangladeshi women are already on it.
